Hello October...
And October sure knows how to kick start Autumn!
The days are getting shorter, the evenings are drawing in, the leaves are beginning to turn and suddenly there are pumpkins everywhere. Halloween is on the horizon, the first spooky trails start appearing and there’s a definite feeling that winter is just around the corner. And we all know what that means… it won't be long before the festive adverts start creeping onto our screens!
But October has its own advantages.
A favourite has to be the later sunrise. While we're lucky enough to have a beautiful bay right on our doorstep, those extra hours of darkness in the morning give you the chance to head a little further afield and explore some of Pembrokeshire’s other beautiful beaches as the sun comes up. Penally Beach, Tenby, Freshwater East or somewhere completely new — there are plenty of places to choose from.
And the sunrises really do seem to hit differently at this time of year. Maybe it’s the warmer colours, the cooler mornings or the way the light seems to stretch across the sea. Whatever it is, there’s something pretty good about standing on a quiet beach as the day gets going.
The beaches themselves feel different once the summer crowds have gone. There’s more space to wander, the coastline can feel a little wilder and the changing weather brings some pretty spectacular skies. The seasonal dog restrictions have also lifted, so there’s plenty of opportunity for those longer autumn walks with your four-legged companions too.
Back at Swallow Tree, the woods start changing colour and the park takes on a different feel as the season moves on. There’s still plenty to explore outside, but October is also the month when an indoor swim starts to sound particularly appealing after a day out on the coast. And for those staying in one of our hot tub lodges, there’s the added bonus of coming back after a day exploring and warming up in your own private hot tub.
There’s plenty going on locally too. October brings pumpkin patches, Halloween events and spooky village trails, alongside all the usual walks, beaches, castles and coastal spots that make Pembrokeshire such a good place to explore. And then there’s the wildlife. We’ve already had seals and even a couple of porpoises popping up off our coast recently, so it’s always worth keeping an eye on the water — you never quite know what you might spot.
October really is that month in between. Summer has gone, winter isn't quite here yet, and Pembrokeshire is still very much there to be explored. It's a month for getting outside, seeing a different side of the coast, embracing the changing season and making the most of those last few weeks before winter really settles in.
