What makes a holiday one you remember?
Looking back through old photographs of Swallow Tree that we've shared over the years, one thing has really stood out to us.
It’s not just the photographs themselves that people remember. It’s everything that surrounds them.
When we share an old photograph, the comments often bring back far more than we could ever see in the picture itself. People remember the families who stayed in neighbouring caravans, the children who spent their days running around the park and making friends, and even the animals around the park that became part of the story.
They remember the little things that probably seemed completely ordinary at the time — helping out in the greenhouses, getting involved in whatever was going on, or simply being part of everyday life on the park.
And then, years later, they still remember them.
The best memories aren't always the things you planned before you arrived.
Sometimes it's the people in the caravan next door. The children you met and spent the week playing with. Something that happened around the park that you got involved in without really thinking about it. Or an animal that happened to be around so often that it became part of your holiday. Those are the things that can stay with you.
Holidays have changed a lot over the years, of course. The way we travel, where we stay and what we do when we're away are all very different now. But perhaps the things that make a holiday memorable haven't changed quite so much. It's still the people you meet, the things you do without really planning them, and the little moments that become stories you still tell years later.
Memories that come back around
One of the things we're particularly lucky to see at Swallow Tree is those memories coming full circle.
People who first came here as children returning with their own families. People who stayed here decades ago coming back after many years away. And sometimes, people who have been part of Swallow Tree for so long that they've become part of its own story. We've seen this time and time again in the comments on our old photographs.
Someone will recognise a place, a caravan or a familiar face. Someone else will remember the year they came, who they stayed with, or the family who were next door. And quite often, a simple photograph opens up a whole conversation about a holiday from 30, 40 or even 50 years ago.
That's what makes these old photographs so interesting to us.
They show us how much Swallow Tree has changed, but they also show us how much of a holiday isn't really captured in a photograph at all.
Now and Then
Swallow Tree looks very different today from those early photographs. The park has changed, the accommodation has changed and holidays themselves have moved on.
But amongst all those changes, we hope there is still room for the same sort of memories.
It's still the people you meet, the things you do without really planning them, and the little moments that become stories you still tell years later.
We've been incredibly lucky to see generations of families return to Swallow Tree over the years — sometimes with children of their own, and sometimes after many years away.
And perhaps that's one of the nicest things about being here for so long.
We hope that, amongst all the changes over the years, Swallow Tree is still a place where people make those memories. ❤️
